As the Oscar nominees were announced yesterday, the American Library Association announced the 2008 Caldecott and Newbery medals known as the "Academy Awards" of children's literature. The Caldecott Medal, a prize for illustration, was given to The Invention of Hugo Cabret, written and illustrated by Brian Selznick, while Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! written by Laura Amy Schlitz and illustrated by Robert Byrd, received the Newbery Medal for best-written children's book.
