Fifty Years of Great Writers
This Saturday night, October 21, we are celebrating fifty years of the Sarah Josepha Hale Award. Incredible writers of the last fifty years have come to Newport and read or spoken to us about such things as poetry, politics, natural history, and literature. It is always a magical evening. I hope you will join us at 8:00 in the Newport Opera House to see Ellen Goodman receive the Sarah Hale Medal and listen to her speech. It's free!

Congratulations to the Richards Free Library Board of Trustees, from myself, and Brad Sears of Hedgehog's Whimsey Books at 8 Main St. My apologies for not being in attendance this year of all years to meet and ask questions of Ellen Goodman. I hope Brad will be able to be there. I am in Erfurt, Germany, awaiting the birth of my third grandbaby. Reading reviews: The eldest, Sumayya, 3, recommends any Franklin the Turtle book by Paulette Bourgeois & Brenda Clark (the Messy Room story is popular with her mother), and Huda, 18 mos. is all for Where's Maisy? by Lucy Cousins, about 37 times a day. Sometimes we read it backwards. Say hello to my Geezer, Brad, for me ... he's lonely at the store, he says. I may not be back until early January, as I will be helping my family travel to Irbid, Jordan, the home of my late son-in-law's parents. Enjoy your evening, folks. Lucy, hedgehogswhimsey@nhvt.net
