Speculate
The Library has received a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council to sponsor three book discussions. The three discussions are part of the year long program entitled: Speculate: a new past, a different present, an out-of-this-world future. Speculative fiction is a collection of the genres– science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and magical realism--all of which tease us with possible realities, histories and futures. The grant allows the library to invite independent scholars to lead the discussions. The series begins on February 21st when Suzanne Brown of Dartmouth College will lead the discussion of Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress. The series will continue on March 21st when Sarah Poisson of Granite State College who will talk about Burn by New Hampshire Writer James Patrick Kelly. The series will conclude on May 16th with Matt Winkler leading us through The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin. The programs will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Oval Room. Books are available for loan one month before each session. For more information contact Andrea Thorpe at 603-863-3430 or athorpe@newport.lib.nh.us
