Talk to the Frackville Library

      It's time for pie-as in those delicious pies from Deppen's Farm in nearby Lykens, PA. Many of the libraries in the Schuylkill District are once again participating in the sale. The price remains at $8.50 per pie and we are offering ten yummy flavors. Blueberry crumb(our biggest seller!), apple crumb, raisin crumb, strawberry/rhubarb crumb, cherry, apple, no sugar apple, lemon sponge, coconut custard, and shoo-fly. Orders must be placed and paid by July 22, 2009 and pies will be available for pick up at the library on August 5, 2009. Help the library and save time in the kitchen this summer.       Our Adult Reader's Group will meet on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 7PM  to discuss Handle With Care, the newest offering of popular novelist Jodi Picoult. Ms. Picoult has thousands of  loyal fans, and her books have been very well received. Some have even been made into films. Her latest story tells of a woman who is forced to choose between the welfare of her child and an old and valued friend. Picoult blends the themes of family, medical challenges, and the law in a way that many readers find very satisfying. If you're a Jodi Picoult fan, come join in our discussion.      The library has recently been the recipient of three grants which have provided us with funding for much needed materials and equipment. The Schuylkill Area Community Foundation and the Ben Franklin Trust has awarded us a grant for 30 new DVD's which will include selections for family viewing, award winning popular films, and films of interest to teens. These DVD's should be available for lending within the next several weeks.  The Frackville Rotary has awarded us funding for some new computer furniture to allow us to place a computer in our children's area. The computer will be loaded with educational games. We will also be receiving a color printer from this grant for our patrons who have a need for color copies. The third grant will provide for new materials for young children including books, audio/visual items, and computer materials. This grant was awarded to us by the Snayberger Memorial Foundation. We are really grateful to our community partners for their generous assistance in these touch economic times. Be sure to visit the library and enjoy these new resources over the coming months!   

      New things happening at the library may cause a few inconveniences to our patrons, so  we would like to give you the details. On June 22 and 23 we will be changing internet service providers. Internet access may not be available on those two days, so please call first before you make an unecessary trip. Everything should be back in order by Wednesday, June 24.  Also, because of the change we may not be able to do website updates for awhile, but keep reading our blog.  Postings will be made frequently during this transition stage to keep you informed of all the library news.      I just took a peak into the first volume of Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls by  Meg Cabot. Cabot is best known for her books for older teens, especially The Mediator series. The Allie Finkle series is written for younger girls in grades 4-6. Allie is a nine year-old who likes math and science, collecting rocks, and making rules. She has a notebook to write them all down. But things get confused when her parents tell her and her brothers that the family is moving to another part of town. The new house is old and scary, and so is the prospect of a new school and new friends. Allie is determined to stay right where she is! This first volume of the series, Moving Day, is available at the library, along with volumes 2 and 3, just out this spring.
