Just finished reading...
Watchman by Ian Rankin. In the tradition of LeCarre's George Smiley and Deighton's Bernard Samson, Miles Flint is an agent for the British security service MI5. His job is in surveillance, but when his last few assignments go sour, he suddenly finds himself on a mission to Northern Ireland and on the run. Flint is the kind of lovable misfit that earns our respect as he vows to reveal the truth and root out corruption in the organization. The spy novel has had to undergo some changes since the Cold War ended, and this book presents a very effective set of  new villains.

Local history for kids
In putting together our latest library newsletter, which is devoted to local history, I found several interesting books for kids. They all relate to the coal industry and present a fictional view of life in early Pennsylvania mining communities. The Breaker Boys by Pat Hughes tells the story of a friendship between a mine owner's son and a miner's son from the "patch."  Together in Pinecone Patch by Thomas Yeserski is a picture book that chronicles the romance between an Irish girl and a Polish boy in a small mining town. A Coal Miner's Bride: The Diary of Anetka Kaminska by Susan A. Bartoletti takes place in the real town of Lattimer, PA. where a young Polish girl arrives to marry a miner. These books are available for loan at your library.

Mystere canadien...

The library director brought a new mystery series to my attention the other day. It's written by a former Canadian jounalist, Louise Penny, and centers on murderous activities in the small town of Three Pines in the province of Quebec. This series, which consists of three novels so far-Still Life, A Fatal Gace, and The Cruelest Month-features a new detective who has been described by various critics as complicated, engaging, wise, and compassionate. Chief Inspector Armand Gamoche seems destined to be around awhile. Penny's style and thought-provoking characters remind some readers of the popular P.D.James. All three titles in the series are available at your library.
