The library director brought a new mystery series to my attention the other day. It's written by a former Canadian jounalist, Louise Penny, and centers on murderous activities in the small town of Three Pines in the province of Quebec. This series, which consists of three novels so far-Still Life, A Fatal Gace, and The Cruelest Month-features a new detective who has been described by various critics as complicated, engaging, wise, and compassionate. Chief Inspector Armand Gamoche seems destined to be around awhile. Penny's style and thought-provoking characters remind some readers of the popular P.D.James. All three titles in the series are available at your library.
