Kids Succeed by Reading
The Library’s annual Summer Reading Program wrapped up on July 25 after eight weeks of activities designed to keep kids reading during the school break.  Studies show that kids who don’t read over the summer lose some of their reading ability and return to school in “catch up” mode.  This summer, over 500 children recorded that they read approximately 10,000 books, and sixty-three of them participated through the Bookmobile.

Until next summer rolls around, the Library continues its regular schedule of storytimes for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers to ensure that students in the years to come have a head start on their reading and language skills.

Art in the Adobes
The 2nd annual Art in the Adobes will take place September 13-16, and will feature some of the beautiful works of art on permanent exhibit in the Monterey Public Library.  Abel Warshawsky's painting "Paris Studio," created circa 1925-30 and made a gift to the Library by the artist in the early 1950s, is the featured work for Art in the Adobes 2012. Selected as the event's iconic image, it may be seen on posters, cards and the Art in the Adobe website, and will be on exhibit in Casa Gutierrez during the event.  The City of Monterey and the Monterey Public Library, along with other institutions, are collaborating partners in the this event, and  twenty-two paintings from the City Art Collection will be on display in three Monterey State Park adobe houses. During Art in the Adobes, visitors may also come to the Library to see the paintings we have on ongoing display. Complete details
