Success!
Last Friday night, over 400 community members and library supporters transformed Chocolate and Wine Tasting into $12,000 for books and other library resources.  Thanks to the Friends of the Monterey Public Library and volunteers; to all the local wineries, grocers, restaurants, bakeries, candy makers, and local bakers for all the wonderful goodies; to the artists, businesses, and services  who donated items to our silent auction; to The Monterey County Herald  for the great publicity, and to everyone who made this event successful.

Storytime again
I get to do storytimes on February 24.  I love sharing stories and other activities with kids.  Out of the thousands of new books published each year and all the wonderful older books, we have this short time each week to showcase some of the best.   That’s why we take our planning very seriously.  Hours go into deciding what stories to use and how best to present them.  We want to make the books come alive for your kids.  The music and rhymes are also chosen very carefully, because they are a part of the cultural literacy we want to share with the next generation, as well as helping with early literacy and just adding to the fun.  This week, as I focus on stories related to J and K, I will share some Mother Goose rhymes -  “Jack and Jill”, “Jumping Joan”, and “Little Jack Horner” and the old folk song, “Jim Along Josie”.  Do your kids know Mother Goose rhymes?  Check out a Mother Goose book today!  Do your kids know American folk songs?  Take a look at MPL’s great children’s music collection!

Engaging Readers via AMP
On Thursday evening, I attended the 10th anniversary celebration of AMP Public, Education and Government Access Television.  This is a community non-profit media production organization based in Monterey, which provides television broadcast services to public entities and local non-profits.  The organization airs a variety of community-based programming over local cable channels, including the Library’s Cover to Cover  series, in which Library staff discuss and recommend books and other reading materials. Cover to Cover is now in its sixth year of production, has won an Edgar Kennedy award for Informational Programming, and has helped the Library in its effort to continue building a community of readers.

Congratulations AMP for 10 years of service to the community, and thank you for helping the Library with its outreach efforts!

P.S. Check out Cover to Cover on local cable Channel 25 daily at 6:30 p.m. or via streaming video from our Web site and join the community of readers!

The Beatty Award

I’ve just been appointed to the Beatty Award Committee of the California Library Association.  I will soon begin reading new books written about California and will then help decide which one is THE best.  The California Library Association's John and Patricia Beatty Award honors the author of a distinguished book for children or young adults that best promotes an awareness of California and its people.  Last year's winner was
Operation Redwood by S. Terrell French, a great adventure book with technology and ecology included.  Something like Hoot.

I'm excited about the committee.  I'll be reading lots of books that aren't so good probably, but lots of good ones too.  And I'll help to decide which book will probably be read by the most people.  What's your favorite book  that takes place in California?  Did it get published after 1988?  Find out if it won the Beatty award .

Brits for Literacy and Libraries
It isn’t only American libraries that are facing challenges.  In Great Britain over 400 libraries face closure as government seeks to reduce spending.   This inspired a day of protest across the UK to campaign against the plan.

According to BBC News, rallies, flashmob readings, storytelling, and sit-ins have been joined by readers, library supporters, authors,  and other concerned citizens.   Jonathan Douglas, director of the National Literacy Trust supported the “Save Our Libraries Day” urging everyone to stand up for the “importance of literacy and libraries.”

Read all about it.

Signs of Spring
While Midwesterners battle ice storms and snowdrifts, blue skies, tulips, and ornamental plum trees in bloom suggest that spring is just around the corner here in Monterey. The Library has a fresh coat of paint, and soon we will have improved exterior signage as well, thanks to the work of the Library Board of Trustees, the Architectural Review Committee and generous donations from Library supporters. Four signs are planned: a painted sign on the south wall; a larger address sign at the north corner; a marquee with Library hours and program information mounted on a north-facing buttress; and a large banner with Library hours hanging from the terrace, visible from Parking Lot C. We hope that these signs will make it easier for first-time customers to find us, and make it easier for everyone to determine the best days and times to visit the Library this spring!
