That's Cooking!

On Sunday, almost 350 people gathered in the Steinbeck Forum at the Monterey Conference Center for two reasons. One was to enjoy the informative and entertaining presentation by celebrity Chef Martin Yan, of public television’s Yan Can Cook, who chopped, chatted, cooked and charmed the crowd for the good cause of raising money to help the Monterey Public Library offset a 30% ct in our book budget.

We learned a lot about Chinese cuisine and culture, and a lot about the legendary chef who, like Julia Child, became one of TVs first chefs to rise to stardom, and he’s stayed at the top of his profession for over three decades.  Martin Yan, who has hosted more than 3,600 Yan Can Cook shows and is the author of 30 cookbooks, evidently has a soft spot for libraries.  Because of his generosity, the kindness of local businesses, especially the Del Monte Shopping Center, our media sponsors KWAV97 FM and KIDD Oldies 630 AM (both part of Buckley Broadcasting), the Friends of the Monterey Public Library, the  fantastic staff at the Monterey Conference Center and everyone who attended the event, we raised a little over $5,000 for the purchase of books and other library resources.
The community coming together to raise fun while raising funds and learning how to make beautiful food, now, that’s cooking!

In a Better Place But Not Out of the Woods

The Library is very grateful that the Monterey City Council approved funds from the Neighborhood Improvement Program to keep the Library open on Sundays beginning July 19 through the fiscal year that ends June 30, 2010. This is good news, but we’re not out of the woods. The Library’s budget for collections was reduced by 30%, hich will translate into fewer new books and other materials, and longer waits for the most popular items. Fortunately, the Friends of the Monterey Public Library have stepped up their fund raising efforts to help offset some of these cuts and you can help support their efforts.

Coming up this Saturday, July 11, from 1 – 4 p.m., the Friends will be selling books in the Library lobby, including many special collectors’ editions. These beautiful books make great additions to your home library and fantastic gifts.

Then on Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m., don’t miss the entertaining and informative presentation by celebrity Chef Martin Yan of public television’s Yan Can Cook in the Steinbeck Forum at the Monterey Conference Center. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 12-under. Chef Yan’s presentation will include a cooking demonstration, discussion of Chinese cuisine and travel, and a book signing. Tickets may be purchased at the Library Check-out Desk in advance or at the door. All proceeds will go to the purchase of books and other collections.

Other fund raising events include the October 18 Monterey House Tour (mark your calendar!) and the annual Chocolate & Wine Tasting in February. Please check the Friends’ Web site for details about  upcoming fund raising events, and thank you for your support!

Things are Looking Up!

As you probably heard, the Monterey City Council voted to restore funds to allow the library to be open once again for seven days a week!  We'll be closed on Sunday the 12th, but hope to open our doors again on Sundays very soon.

This is most excellent news as the library has been bursting at the seams lately!  Earlier this week a library customer sent an email to the Mayor and City Council comparing the library to the waiting room of a busy international airport when many flights are delayed based on what he saw during his recent visit.  As one of the reference librarians, I couldn't agree more.  I've worked at MPL for three years and during this time I've watched the library become more and more heavily used.  Any hours that we might be forced to cut due to budget restrictions means even more people will be visiting the library the hours we *are* open.  We're running out of space!

Anyway, we'd like to thank you for all the support you've given us in recent months and hope to see you in the library soon.
