Cozy up to a good book!

What to Read on a Cold Winter Afternoon by you.

The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith is the story of Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's first (and only) female private eye. Her cases are the usual blend of missing people, cheating husbands and small crimes, but her observations about life, Africa and people in general are a delight. You'll cheer her on as she gossips her way to solutions, as she falls just a little bit in love with her mechanic, and in the process you'll learn a great deal about the people and culture of Botswana. The best part is that this is the first book in series, so if you didn't get enough the first time, you can get a second helping.

A Good Winter Read

The Bachelor Brother's Bed and Breakfast by Bill Richardson is a delightful tale of two eccentric brothers who run a Canadian B&B for book lovers. The author weaves together book lists, recipes, a talking parrot and really bad poetry into a delightful blend that will remind readers of Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon series.  It is a sweet, humorous read that can comfortably be read in a single afternoon by the fireplace.

NEW - 1st Step Story Time

Winter Session: January 19 - March 9, Mondays 9:30-10:30 AM

1st Step is a fun, interactive program for children 1½ to 2½ years old and their caregivers. Throughout the program, toddlers will be exposed to a wide variety of music & movement activities, sign language, letter/word identification, numbers, colors, shapes, and other pre-literacy activities. Instructors will also share appropriate books, songs, and activities with caregivers for use at home.
Many toddlers are not quite ready for the structure of a more formal story time setting. 1st Step gives them the opportunity to explore their surroundings in an environment that encourages them to move and discover and very rarely sit still. At the same time 1st Step helps toddlers begin to learn how to follow directions, to listen, to respond appropriately in a group, and to become more aware of themselves and others.
Each 1st Step class consists of a 30 minute activity session followed by 30 minutes of free-play time. Caregivers should wear loose comfortable clothing and are strongly encouraged to be silly, sit on the floor, sing loudly and have fun!
1st Step meets once a week for 8 weeks from January 19 through March 9.

Class size is limited so please register by calling 793-7116.
