IN-PERSON: New York Times Bestselling Author Sam Kean, Author of Dinner with King Tut: How Rogue Archaeologists Are Recreating the Sights, Sounds, Smells, and Tastes of Lost Civilizations

Thursday, Aug. 21, 6:30 p.m.
Registration required, begins Jul 3.
In Dinner with King Tut, science writer Sam Kean takes readers on an archaeological romp through the history of humankind—and all five senses—to explore the history and culture of past societies. Kirkus, in a starred review, applauds Dinner with King Tut calling it a “fast-paced, vividly written tale that brings lost civilizations into sharp focus.”

History often neglects the tastes, textures, sounds, and smells that were an intimate part of our ancestors’ lives, but a new generation of researchers is resurrecting those hidden details, pioneering an exciting new discipline called experimental archaeology. To explore and learn, these scientists are learning by doing: making mummies, investigating unsolved murders of ancient bog bodies, carving primitive spears and hunting with them, and building their own perilous boats to plunge out into the open sea. Kean joins these archaeologists on their adventures across the globe to experience history as it was, with all its dangers, disappointments, and unexpected delights.

Sam Kean is the New York Times bestselling author of The Bastard Brigade, Caesar’s Last Breath (the Guardian’s Science Book of the Year), The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons, The Violinist’s Thumb, and The Disappearing Spoon. He is also a two-time finalist for the PEN / E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. His work has appeared in The Best American Science and Nature Writing, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and the New York Times Magazine, among other publications. Kean has also been featured on a number of programs including NPR’s Radiolab, All Things Considered, Science Friday, and Fresh Air. He has his own podcast, The Disappearing Spoon.
