IN-PERSON: Pulitzer Prize-Winning Historian Rick Atkinson, Author of The Fate of the Day: The War for America, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston, 1777-1780
Saturday, May 3, 2 p.m.
In the second installment in Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, Rick Atkinson's landmark American Revolution trilogy, George Washington’s army fights on the knife edge between victory and defeat. Coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the beginning of the Revolution, Atkinson’s brilliant account of the lethal conflict offers not only deeply research and dramatic history, but also a new perspective on the demands that a democracy makes on its citizens.
The first twenty-one months of the American Revolution was the story of a ragged group of militiamen and soldiers, fighting to forge a new nation. By winter 1777, the group could claim only that it had barely escaped annihilation by the world’s most formidable fighting force. However, George III’s task of making his rebellious colonies bow to his rule is more complicated than originally planned as the war has become expensive and rumors are swirling that other nations are planning to join forces with the Americans. Following the movements of George Washington as he works to garner materials, men and money; Benjamin Franklin wooing the French General William Howe planning campaigns against the Americans, and more, this tale will take you across the globe and provide a birds-eye view of the strategy in place.
Rick Atkinson is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of seven previous works of history, including The Long Gray Line, The Liberation Trilogy (An Army at Dawn, The Day of Battle, and The Guns at Last Light), and The British Are Coming, the first volume of the Revolution Trilogy. He has won numerous awards, including Pulitzer Prizes for history and journalism.
