Summer Reading Plans are Underway
![]() The first official day of Summer Reading is July 1, 2011. The program will wrap up in mid August with our 3rd annual Pool Party for school aged kids (you have to earn your way in!) and our pre-school music party a few days later. Returning program series will include: Tuesday Morning Drop In Story Times w/ Ms. Heather (themes may include Cowboys vs. Aliens, Dragons vs. Princesses and Sharks vs. Trains... notice a pattern here?) Stories, songs, short movies or kid-friendly youtube clips, a snack and a craft. With 60 or 70 of your closest friends. We have a lot of fun, but expect a big crowd (and don't be afraid to bring your friends, since the more, the merrier.) Book Buddies (Teens Read to Kids) on Thursday mornings, and hopefully also on Wednesdays in the early evening! Registration for children (aged 3-8) is absolutely required ( registration is currently scheduled to open on June 13, 2011). Readers' Theater (ages 6 to 12, hopefully on Monday evenings OR Friday afternoons.) We have high hopes that this year we'll be able to add a "digital edition" of our storytellers' performances, thanks to the technology grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving." Registration is required, these programs fill up quickly. Movies on the Big Screen (Family movies with free hot popcorn every Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.) We've heard a lot of interest in Rango, Gnomeo and Juliet, and Mars Needs Moms, Planet 51 and maybe Rio if it is released in time. And don't forget Monsters vs. Aliens and Beauty and the Beast (we have to include at least one movie that allows for costumes!) Any other recommendations? And plans are underway to include: Movies on the Big Screen: Teen Edition (more free popcorn, of course.) Shana recommends Beastly, Twilight, HP 7-1, and Men In Black. Let us know what you think, we'll believe we'll only have THREE of these, every other Wednesday night starting July 12. Tween Book Club: the other three Wednesdays. Ms. Heather guarantees that one title we definitely want to discuss is "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman, and she's pushing for "Tale Dark and Grimm" by Adam Gidwitz for another great read. These clubs will include discussion, theme snacks, and project or game to entertain everyone. Again, recommendations are welcome. Oh, and we're going to have a BIG Harry Potter Birthday Party, open to everyone, on Thursday, July 28, in the late afternoon/early evening. Start planning your costumes now! We'll have Tales from Beetle the Bard, excitement in Snape's Lab, HP treats and lots more. We'll need volunteers (teens and adults) to pull this one off, so please let Ms. Heather or Ms. Betsy if you'd like to become Hogwarts staff for the day. We'll update our blog once we know who our special guest performers/special events will be!
