1849-1906, Madison County Death & Obituary Index
This database indexes the deaths in early Madison County newspapers and other miscellaneous sources that are available in the Indiana Room at APL. Most local newspapers did not survive to be microfilmed, so the number of obituaries available before 1900 is limited.

This database indexes the obituaries which appeared in the Anderson Daily Bulletin and Herald Bulletin from 1907 to 1997. The date which is given in the index is the date the obituary appeared in the newspaper and not necessarily the date of death.

This database indexes the obituaries which appeared in the Anderson Herald-Bulletin from 1998 to 2017, including online-only obituaries from 2016 and beyond.

Madison County Cemetery Records Database
There are over 70,000 people in this database from 98 cemeteries. However, there are dozens of entries where people do not have legible last names, therefore you may want to search for "unknown" first and last names just to be thorough. The index may list people whose tombstones no longer exist, and the information on the tombstones may be difficult or impossible to decipher. Internments after 2000 are generally not included. Also, many of the burials in the Memorial Park/Anderson Memorial Park cemetery were not available for inclusion in this index. Refer to
Madison County Cemetery Names/Codes for information on individual cemeteries.
Madison County Deaths in Indiana Newspapers, 1838-1906
The obituaries and deaths included are ones found in Indiana newspapers outside of Madison County, but were not mentioned in Madison County newspapers, making it a very unique resource. The index covers deaths from 1836-1906, however, it is not a comprehensive listing of all obituaries found outside Madison County and not all counties or newspapers are represented. The actual text of the obituaries is not available online, but if you contact the Indiana Room we can provide either a paper copy or a scan of the obituary you want.

Information in this database was compiled from the book Gold Star Honor Roll: A Record of Indiana Men and Women Who Died in the Services of the United States and the Allied Nations in the World War. 1914-1918.
Madison County Civil War Veterans Databases
Names for this database were taken primarily from two sources:
* Report of the Adjutant-General of the State of Indiana, 1865-1869.
* Davis, Ray. Militia Enrollments and volunteer lists...Madison County, Indiana. 1970.
The Adjutant-General's report is the most important and authoritative source for Indiana Civil War soldier information. All soldiers listing Madison County as a residence in the report are included in the database.
The Madison County Militia Enrollment took place on August 14, 1862, in each township in Madison County. The original lists are at the Indiana State Archives. Submitted along with the enrollment lists was a list of township residents who were or who had been in the service. Most of the names from these lists were added to the database as well. (There were a few which were illegible and some with names so common or so unrecognizable that no accurate match to the A-G's report could be made.)
In addition, the following sources were consulted:
* DAR Madison County Veterans Card File, Indiana Room, Anderson Public Library.
* Harden, Samuel. History of Madison County, Indiana, from 1820 to 1874.
* Harden, Samuel. Those I have met ; or, Boys in Blue. 1888.
* History of Madison County, Indiana. Kingman Brothers, 1880.
* Leedom, Phyllis Hart. Madison County, Indiana Civil War Soldiers. 1981.
* Miller, Marjorie & Linda Ead. Civil War veterans, Union and Confederate, buried in the Elwood City Cemetery and surrounding cemeteries. 2008.

Madison County Marriages, 1921-1951

This index is available in book form at the Anderson Public Library and is also part of the Indiana marriages database on Ancestry.com. No records exist for Madison County marriages prior to December 10, 1880. These were destroyed in a courthouse fire.
This database, which covers marriages from 1921 to mid-1951, indexes an additional 30 years of marriage licenses. It was created using microfilm of Madison County marriage books 35-84, filmed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the 1990s.

Search Naturalization Records
Madison County Naturalization Records
Here you will find the names and birth nations of all persons who applied for naturalization at the Madison County courthouse between the years 1890-1958, along with the naturalization date.
You will find multiple listings, spelling variations and several name changes. We have tried to record all name spellings as accurately as possible; when it was impossible to read handwriting, we have tried to preserve all possible variations. In the case of name changes, the subject will be listed under both names (if they both appeared on the naturalization record.)
If you find a name you wish to pursue further, please contact Indiana Room staff. We have microfilmed copies of the original naturalization books and we will be glad to provide you with copies the record(s) you are interested in, for a small charge.
