Database Details

Madison County Casualties of World War I

Information in this database was compiled from the book Gold Star Honor Roll: A Record of Indiana Men and Women Who Died in the Services of the United States and the Allied Nations in the World War. 1914-1918.

Madison County Civil War Veterans Databases

Names for this database were taken primarily from two sources:

* Report of the Adjutant-General of the State of Indiana, 1865-1869.
* Davis, Ray. Militia Enrollments and volunteer lists...Madison County, Indiana. 1970.

The Adjutant-General's report is the most important and authoritative source for Indiana Civil War soldier information. All soldiers listing Madison County as a residence in the report are included in the database.

The Madison County Militia Enrollment took place on August 14, 1862, in each township in Madison County. The original lists are at the Indiana State Archives. Submitted along with the enrollment lists was a list of township residents who were or who had been in the service. Most of the names from these lists were added to the database as well. (There were a few which were illegible and some with names so common or so unrecognizable that no accurate match to the A-G's report could be made.)

In addition, the following sources were consulted:

* DAR Madison County Veterans Card File, Indiana Room, Anderson Public Library.
* Harden, Samuel. History of Madison County, Indiana, from 1820 to 1874.
* Harden, Samuel. Those I have met ; or, Boys in Blue. 1888.
* History of Madison County, Indiana. Kingman Brothers, 1880.
* Leedom, Phyllis Hart. Madison County, Indiana Civil War Soldiers. 1981.
* Miller, Marjorie & Linda Ead. Civil War veterans, Union and Confederate, buried in the Elwood City Cemetery and surrounding cemeteries. 2008.

Madison County Servicemen and Women of World II

This database indexes the collected newspaper coverage from the Anderson Herald and Anderson Daily Bulletin from the years 1941-1945 regarding local residents who served in WWII. The articles were collected in a series of books entitled Service Men and Women, World War II, which is in the Indiana Room collection.
