Ornamental grasses are popular low-maintenance landscape plants. Many native grasses demonstrate ornamental qualities in addition to performing valuable ecosystem services, such as attracting pollinators, providing food and habitat for wildlife, mitigating storm water, and stabilizing the soil. Furthermore, many grasses are deer resistant and stress tolerant with some species preferring dry, sunny locations, while others thrive in wet and shady environments. By developing an understanding of the major types of grasses and sedges that are native to our region, you can gain confidence about when and how to use them in your garden to promote important ecological functions while improving the aesthetics of the landscape.
