Born into slavery in 1863, Professor Gilbert was the first African American to conduct professional archaeological work in Greece as a member of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1890-91. Gilbert went on to earn a national reputation as a scholar, teacher, community leader, and missionary before his death in 1923.
Professor Lee’s talk will draw upon the research he conducted for his book The First Black Archaeologist: A Life of John Wesley Gilbert (Oxford University Press, 2022).
