On Tuesday, October 27 at 7 p.m. the Hudson Library & Historical Society will host a live virtual streaming event with author Stephanie Storey, who will discuss her latest art history thriller, Raphael, Painter in Rome. The book tells the story of the creation of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel through the eyes of his fiercest rival, the painter, Raphael.

Called to Rome by Pope Julius II, these two Renaissance masters are pitted against each other: Michelangelo painting the Sistine ceiling, while Raphael decorates the pope’s private apartments.  As Raphael strives toward perfection in paint, he battles internal demons: his desperate ambition, crippling fear of imperfection, and unshakable loneliness. Along the way, he conspires with cardinals, scrambles through the ruins of ancient Rome, and falls in love with a baker’s-daughter-turned-prostitute who becomes his muse.

Storey is the author of Oil and Marble: A Novel of Leonardo and Michelangelo which has been translated into six languages and is in development as a feature film by Pioneer Pictures. She is also a TV producer of The Alec Baldwin Show on ABC, The Arsenio Hall Show on CBS, and the Emmy-nominated The Writers’ Room for Sundance. Story has a degree in Fine Arts from Vanderbilt University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College.

Copies of Raphael, Painter in Rome will be available for purchase courtesy of the Learned Owl Book Shop. Registration for this program is required and a valid email address is required at time of registration. Participants will receive an email invitation to attend the program, hosted on Zoom, a day before the program begins. If you have any questions, please email or call (330) 653-6658 x1010.
