Local Author Wendy Chin-Tanner in Conversation with Jamia Wilson

A transcendent debut novel about family, love, and belonging, set against the backdrops of New York City and a historical leprosarium in 1950s Louisiana, Wendy Chin-Tanner's debut novel King of the Armadillos follows one young man’s quest to not only survive, but live a full and vibrant life. 

Chin-Tanner will discuss themes of immigration, disease stigma, the intersections of race, class, and gender, the artist's journey, non-traditional families, and trauma and recovery with writer, commentator, and feminist activist Jamia Wilson. 

About the Speakers:

Wendy Chin-Tanner is the author of the novel KING OF THE ARMADILLOS and the poetry collections TURN, which was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award, and ANYONE WILL TELL YOU. She is the editor of EMBODIED: An Intersectional Feminist Comics Poetry Anthology, co-author of the graphic novel AMERICAN TERRORIST, and co-founder of A Wave Blue World, an independent publishing company for graphic novels. Wendy’s poems and essays have been featured in numerous journals and publications including the Academy of American PoetsThe Rumpus, The Collagist, Salon, Gay Magazine, The Kenyon Review, Literary Hub, and DAME Magazine. Her work has been covered by The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Ms. Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Paste Magazine, Deep South Magazine, and The Southern Bookseller, and she has been featured on ABC News Live Prime with Linsey Davis and NPR. She was a founding editor at KIN Poetry Journal, a poetry editor at The Nervous Breakdown for over a decade, and staff interviewer at Lantern Review. Born and raised in New York City, Wendy was educated at Cambridge University, UK where she studied English Literature and Sociology. She lives in the Hudson Valley with her family.

Jamia Wilson is an award-winning feminist activist, writer, speaker, and podcaster. She joined Random House as vice president and executive editor in 2021. As the former director of the Feminist Press at the City University of New York and the former VP of programs at the Women’s Media Center, Jamia has been a leading voice on women’s rights issues for over a decade. Her work has appeared in numerous outlets, including the New York Times, the Today Show, CNN, Elle, BBC, Rookie, Refinery 29, Glamour, Teen Vogue, and The Washington Post. She is the author of This Book Is Feminist, Young, Gifted, and Black, the introduction and oral history in Together We Rise: Behind the Scenes at the Protest Heard Around the World, Step Into Your Power: 23 Lessons on How to Live Your Best Life, Big Ideas for Young Thinkers, ABC's of AOC, and the co-author of Roadmap for Revolutionaries: Resistance, Advocacy, and Activism for All. Jamia is passionate about mission-driven organizations and serves on the Omega Institute, ERA Coalition and Center for Reproductive Rights boards, and the St. Timothy’s School Advisory Council. She is also the co-host of the second season of the Anthem Award-winning podcast, Ordinary Equality.
