TIL - Local History Speaker Series: “So They Came: Young Men Farmers” (ZOOM/VIRTUAL Registration)

Saturday, Mar. 22, 2:00pm

Join us for the first of four Local History Speaker Series events this year about the history of Oxford County.

Delivered by local historian Dr. Elaine Becker, this presentation tells the story of Burnside Lodge in Woodstock, where in the 1920s hundreds of young men from overseas arrived to begin a new life in Canada. Sponsored by the Salvation Army, these “boy farmers” (ages 14-19) came from families facing untold challenges of unemployment, illness, and death, as well as the lack of hope for the future.

This entry is for the Zoom/virtual event. To register, click on "Register" (above). Registration is required and closes March 21st at 5pm EST. An email address is required so that we can send you the Zoom meeting link on the day of the event.

If this is your first time using Zoom, or perhaps your first time in a long while, it is recommended that you review this short tutorial video on Zoom’s website. Note that we’ve configured the meeting room so that participants may join via a direct invitation link, so the 0:12 to 1:20 portion of the video will be most applicable.

We intend to begin streaming at 2pm or soon after. Should you encounter any Zoom issues, please refer to Zoom’s online support page for guidance. Please note that library staff will not be available to help resolve Zoom problems over the phone.

If you would like to experience the event with captioning, and you've joined a Zoom meeting using the Zoom application (as opposed to joining via browser), you can activate Zoom's captioning tool by clicking the "captions" icon ("CC" in a rectangle) in your meeting controls toolbar (the ribbon with all the tool icons on it). To make captions text larger, click the arrow icon (/\) next to the captions icon, click "Caption settings", and then move the slider to adjust the text's size. You may click here for full instructions on viewing captioning (scroll down to the subsection, "How to view captioning").

This event will not be recorded, and audio and/or video recording of the event is strictly prohibited.
