Shays’ Rebellion in the Berkshires and its Meaning Today
A conversation with local historian Tim Abbott

In 1774, a crowd of over 1,500 people prevented the county Court from sitting in Great Barrington.  This was an act of popular resistance to overreaching Royal authority on the eve of the American Revolution.   In 1786, when citizens in rural Massachusetts tried once again to stop local courts from convening, the State authorities considered it a rebellion against Government that threatened its very existence and that must be suppressed. Shays’ Rebellion had economic roots in the longstanding tradition of English agrarian revolts, as well as the resentment of rural Massachusetts of the political and economic authority centered in Boston.   The inability of loyal Massachusetts forces to pursue the Regulators of Government” across state lines strengthened the case for a strong federal government under the new United States Constitution.

Bio: Local historian Tim Abbott has studied Shays’ Rebellion in the Berkshires, especially the final fight at Sheffield and its aftermath.  He was a featured presenter last January at the Annual Shays Symposium held at the Springfield Armory.
