Opening Reception: Clay Play with the Anderson Center and Elizabeth McGiff

Friday, Sep. 6, 4-5pm
Anderson Center for Autism's mission is to optimize the quality of life for people with autism. We achieve this by utilizing evidence-based treatment and teaching methodologies facilitated by a trained and dedicated team. Yet, there is a certain richness of the quality of life that can only be achieved through experiencing the arts. In 2023, with support from Arts Mid-Hudson, we were fortunate to partner with the ceramic artist Elizabeth McGiff, who taught ceramics to a small group of 5 adults from the Anderson Center for Autism. With resounding support from participants and staff, the program expanded in 2024 to include 30 adults across 2 day program sites.

Collected in this exhibit are various works the classes produced. The adults each participated in their unique way, some completed projects from start to finish, others collaborating on works by completing specific parts of a project using skills within their repertoire. McGiff appreciated the way that people who could not necessarily communicate through vocal language could express themselves through clay and color. With the support of wonderful staff, students produced and collaborated on pieces that embody hours of joyful Clay Play!

Anderson Center for Autism has educated and supported individuals with special needs for 100 years. Today, the organization specializes in interventions and training for children and adults on the autism spectrum and their families, caregivers, and supporters. Anderson Center for Autism: a legacy of compassion, a century of impact.
