Goleta Valley Library
Saturday, May 21, 2pm
Professor Francis Macdonald, Department of Earth Science, UCSB
During the Cryogenian Period from ~720-635 million years ago, the Earth was covered in ice at least twice, from pole to equator. This climate state is referred to as the Snowball state, or Snowball Earth. This time period also overlaps with the Great Unconformity, which is thought to represent the largest gap in the rock record, and the origin of animals. Professor Macdonald will present the geological record of Snowball Earth and the Great Unconformity in the western United States. He also will discuss models for glacial initiation and proposed relationships with the Great Unconformity and biological evolution.
This lecture will take place in the Multi-Purpose room of the library.
