Join us for upcoming events at Kent Free Library. All events are free and open to the public. Registration is required where noted.

African Ensemble
Sunday, Feb. 17, 3:00 pm
Enjoy traditional and modern drumming, dancing, and singing from various African cultural groups as performed by Kent State University’s African Ensemble. Participation in dance will be led after each selection.

The Kent State University African ensemble was created in the 1980s by university professor Halim el-Dabh. Upon joining the faculty in 1989, dr. Kazadi Wa Mukuna, professor of ethnomusicology, assumed the directorship of the group. Their repertoire includes traditional and modern drumming, dancing, and singing from various cultural groups in Africa and its diaspora.

Musicians perform on the 2nd Floor balcony so music can be enjoyed throughout the building. Limited seating is available on the balcony.  Concerts are generously sponsored by the Friends of Kent Free Library.

3D Printing Class: K
Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2:00 pm
Learn how to design your own keychain using TinkerCAD. Keyboarding/mouse skills are required.  Learn about the library’s new 3D printing service.

Registration begins Tuesday, February 5.  Space is limited to 10 people for each session.  Projects will be printed out in the week after the class, for attendees to pick up at the Information Desk.

2019 Environmental F
Tuesday, Feb. 19, 6:00 pm
The Kent Sustainability Commission and the Kent Free Library present an environmental film series.  Screening are free and open to the public.  No registration is required. 

Due to licensing restrictions, titles of films may not be publicized, so the following are descriptions of the films.  For the titles, please contact the Kent Free Library Information Desk at 330.673.4414.

Tuesday, February 19 at 6:00 pm: This film sets out to showcase alternative and creative ways of viewing agriculture, economics, energy and education.

Tuesday, March 19 at 6:00 pm: This film examines the role of urban farming in America and the power it has to revitalize our cities and change the way we eat.

Tuesday, April 16 at 6:00 pm: This film captures events all over the world and exposes the effects of humanity on our planet.
Tuesday, Feb. 19, 7:00 pm
For 11 years, this all-ages group has been meeting to discuss classic and award-winning novels, nonfiction, and plays, such as A Tale of Two Cities, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Charlotte's Web, and Midsummer Night's Dream. Join this energetic group on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Bumprhey Room.

Jason Prufer: Small
Wednesday, Feb. 20, 7:00 pm
Author Jason Prufer’s book, Small Town, Big Music: The Outsized Influence of Kent, Ohio, on the History of Rock and Roll, features first-hand stories of big-name musicians traveling through Kent, as well as the local music scene where Joe Walsh, Patrick Carney, Chrissie Hynde, and DEVO refined their crafts.

The book is published by the Kent State University Press. Prufer ia a graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School and works as a senior library associate in Kent State University’s library. Books will be available for purchase at the event through the Kent Library Foundation.

No registration is required, but space will be limited.  Please pick up a boarding pass at the 2nd floor Information Desk starting at 6:30 pm.

To wrap up the Read-a-Latte Winter Reading Program, we’re hosting a coffee tasting. Join us as we try different, rich flavors of coffee. Winners of the gift basket raffle will be announced.

Read Together Book G

Children in grades 3-5 are invited to join us with an adult for our book group that celebrates reading together! We'll encourage reading and interacation with titles that we will choose together. At each meeting we will discuss our current book of the month and choose a new book for the next month! 
Efferus String Quart

Enjoy a free classical music quartet.

Created in March 2014, the Efferus String Quartet brings together four young professional musicians who share a deep interest in chamber music. Shortly after its foundation, the Efferus Quartet was selected by the Bogota Philharmonic Orchestra and the Teatro Libre of Bogota to participate in the 2nd Chamber Music Festival of the Teatro Libre. In 2014 they premiered the work “Dynamics of a Meteoritre” by the young Colombian composer James Diaz, later recorded, edited and published by the National University of Colombia.

In 2014 and 2016 they attended Festiqartetos Festival where they were coached by the Miami String Quartet and the Avalon String Quartet. In 2015 and 2016 they were selected by audition to study with the Arianna String Quartet at FEMUSC in Brazil. Recently they won a scholarship of the Master Class program of the XI International Music Festival of Cartagena to work with the Latinoamericano Quartet during the festival. Efferus is currently its first year of master’s studies in chamber music at Kent State University with Keith Robinson and Cathy Meng-Robinson.

DIY Green Cleaning P

Starting Seeds Indoo

Starting your own seeds indoors to transplant into your garden or patio containers is fun and economical, plus allows gardeners to grow unique and heirloom varieties not easily found in nurseries.

Learn how to set up and manage your own indoor seed starting station to successfully grow healthy plants.  Get hands on by planting a 4-pack of heirloom cherry tomatoes to take home.  Also learn about the Seed Library and check out seed packets before the Seed Library officially opens the next morning.

Registration begins Thursday, March 7.  Under 18 may attend with a registered adult.  Limit one 4-pack per family.  Space is limited.
