As part of “Scaling the Digital Barriers to a Better Future,” we will be offering free hands-on computer classes to Lansing Library card holders. All classes will be taught on Windows 7 laptops. Attendees will use touchpads.

The target audience for these classes are unemployed, underemployed, those changing careers, and college students of all ages who need to improve or expand their computer skills and learn how to better use technology to access library resources. Registration required.

All class topics will not be offered every month.

Additional computer help is available one-on-one on a by-appointment basis. Lansing residents are encouraged to sign up for the session that best fits their schedule. Classes are limited to 10 Lansing card holders.

Introduction to Microsoft Word 2010: Participants will learn the newest version of Microsoft Word and will learn how to navigate through the program, practicing creating, saving and printing a document.
Length: 1.5 –2 hours.

Do you love a challenge? How about finding places on a map in search of a treasure? Then join our Multi-library Geocaching Event! Geocachingis a free real-world outdoor treasure hunt. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS. Come in the library beginning June 10, 2013 to get your log and start your adventure.

Each log contains a list of coordinates which you can follow to discover hidden treasure at several libraries! Find each treasure and follow their
directions to get your log sheet signed! When you’re done turn it back into us, if you complete the required list you can be entered in a raffle to win an iPad mini! All ages are welcome to sign up for this event!

Department will be repeating the popular series of Family History Classes.
This series of 6 classes will meet on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on
June 13, 20, 27, July 11, July 18, and July 25 (no class July 4).

Classes will be lecture/demonstrations using the electronic resources offered at the library, as well as other free resources available to you. This is perfect for the person just getting started or just interested in finding out what is involved to research your own family.

Week 1 (June 13) Getting Started: Introduction to genealogy, what
Lansing Library offers, focus on Ancestry.com and the Census. Covers how the Census forms the framework for your research.

Week 2 (June 20) Expanding the framework: Using HeritageQuestand Fold3, the newest addition to the Lansing Library resources.
HeritageQuestoffers a different view of the Census Records, Fold3has military records and some important Chicago resources.

Week 3 (June 27) Ancestry beyond the basics: Birth, death, marriage
records, immigration and travel records. Using the “card catalog”
feature to find more sources.

Week 4 (July 11) Beyond Ancestry: The State of Illinois records, Cook County, City of Chicago. Local resources such as South Suburban
Genealogical and Historical Society, The Newberry Library, Chicago
History Museum.

Week 5 (July 18) Other internet resources: The new Familysearch.org, using documents and ordering microfilm. Finding government and other websites of vital records.
Find-a-Grave and other free sites.
Allen County Library.

Week 6: (July 25) Putting it together: Family Tree Maker,
printing charts. Using Google maps. Printing reports. Saving to a flash drive.

As part of “Scaling the Digital Barriers to a Better Future,” we will be offering free hands-on computer classes to Lansing Library card holders. All classes will be taught on Windows 7 laptops. Attendees will use touchpads.

The target audience for these classes are unemployed, underemployed, those changing careers, and college students of all ages who need to improve or expand their computer skills and learn how to better use technology to access library resources. Registration required.

All class topics will not be offered every month.

Additional computer help is available one-on-one on a by-appointment basis. Lansing residents are encouraged to sign up for the session that best fits their schedule. Classes are limited to 10 Lansing card holders.

Conferencing, Interviewing and Communicating via Skype: Participants will learn how to use Skype in their business and job seeking endeavors to make video calls. Length: 1.5 –2 hours.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Computers or Laptop touchpad & Windows 7 experience.
