Enjoy your warm and bright spring evenings with cool and dark French Film Noir. This is your opportunity to take the plunge into the French underworld, but from the safe comfort of your library seat.

Undeniably the master of the French film noir, Jean-Pierre Melville possessed a knowledge of Hollywood’s conventions but was able to twist a routine formula into a magic act. Le Samourai engages the audience with interesting angles without any apparent effort. Film characters can seldom change expression but the film can move faster than a Hollywood Western. Melville adapted the conventions of the American noir novels and movies that flooded post–World War II France to create mesmerizing metaphors. Starring Alain Delon, François Périer and Nathalie Delon, it tells how unplanned events can suddenly challenge a narcissistic but successful French assassin.
