Journey into the Northwest’s legendary Elwha River Valley to discover the people, places, and history behind the world’s largest dam removal project, an unprecedented bet on the power of nature.

Running forty-five miles from mountain headwaters to its mouth on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Olympic Peninsula’s Elwha River Valley has been many things to many people over the past century—a power source for pioneer towns, a favored jaunt for national conservation luminaries like Robert F. Kennedy and Justice William O. Douglas, an area for Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe members to sustain a fish hatchery, a playground for steelhead enthusiasts. Once legendary for its wild salmon runs and Chinook weighing over 100 pounds, today the Elwha is being dramatically restored as the biggest dam removal project anywhere in the world is well underway.

]]>Mr Banerjee has dedicated himself to recording and working for the preservation of Arctic places. Come and see his photographs and hear him talk about his book , Arctic Voices: Resistance at the Tipping Point.
A pristine environment of ecological richness and biodiversity. Home to generations of indigenous people for thousands of years. The location of vast quantities of oil, natural gas, and coal. Largely uninhabited and long at the margins of global affairs, in the last decade Arctic Alaska has quickly become the most contested land in recent US history.

World-renowned photographer, writer, and activist Subhankar Banerjee brings together first-person narratives from more than thirty prominent activists, writers, and researchers who address issues of climate change, resource war, and human rights with stunning urgency and groundbreaking research. From Gwich'in activist Sarah James's impassioned appeal, "We Are the Ones Who Have Everything to Lose," during the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen in 2009, to an original piece by acclaimed historian Dan O'Neill about his recent trips to the Yukon River fish camps, Arctic Voices is a window into a remarkable region. Other contributors include Seth Kantner, Velma Wallis, Nick Jans, Pamela A. Join Kathleen with her Port Townsend poet friends, Stan Rubin and for an evening of poetry in the Carnegie Reading room.

Washington State Poet Laureate 2012-14

Flenniken was raised in Richland, Wash., and currently lives in Seattle. She holds engineering degrees from Washington State University and the University of Washington, as well as a Masters in Fine Arts degree from Pacific Lutheran University. She is president of Floating Bridge Press, a nonprofit organization dedicated to publishing Washington poets, and teaches poetry writing to students of all ages with the support of arts organizations including WSAC, Seattle Arts & Lectures’ Writers in the Schools program and Jack Straw Productions.

Flenniken’s first book, Famous (University of Nebraska Press, 2006), won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry, and was a finalist for a Washington State Book Award. Her second collection, Plume (University of Washington Press, 2012), about the Hanford nuclear site, was recently chosen for the Pacific Northwest Poetry Series.

"Socrates Cafe, or philosophy is not only for the college graduate student, or the "highly intellectual" people who seem to know a lot about everything. Even the dictionary doesn't confine it to them. Philosophy is the "love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline" according to the American Heritage dictionary.

So, why should you care about these Socrates Cafés? Well answer these questions first. When was the last time you could discuss your thoughts openly and honestly with others? Have you ever questioned society and it's assumptions or your own? Do you like to have a good, safe discussion without fear of being attacked for having an opinion that is different? This is Socrates Café.

Here we are, a group of individuals, who like to talk. We come from all walks of life, all nationalities, all religions, all political views, both genders. We come from North, East, South and West. We get together and discuss what is on our minds, from something on the news that day to the age old questions of "What is ...?" We want to help you learn how to think, not what to think."
