"Koyal Dark, Mango Sweet" by Kashmira Sheth

Rating: Good (4)

Koyal Dark, Mango Sweet follows Jetta, a sixteen year old living in Mumbai, India. As Jetta's two older sisters go through the process of finding a husband through an arranged marriage, Jetta realizes that she does not want the same thing. When she befriends Sarina, the wealthy and liberal daughter of a judge, Jetta finds the importance of an education and the possibility of being more than she ever thought.
Koyal Dark, Mango Sweet is a great novel which shows off a culture so different from our own. Although there is a romance in this book, I would place it in the genre of romance. The true struggle in Koyal Dark, Mango Sweet is for the characters to see that although breaking tradition is difficult, sometimes it is necessary. I would recommend this book to anyone willing to learn about different cultures around the world.

Did Noah really get every kind of animal onto the ark? Did anyone else survive the flood? These questions and more are asked my Noah's daughter Timnah. It cuts to my heart in some places, and other times I want to shout in frusteration at the characters. The author has skillfully created a Noah's ark I had never imagined, but is her's also the correct one? Read this mistifying book that talks about the end of the world, but it turns out that the end of the world might not be as horrible as everyone thinks.

 -------------------------------------------

Find this Book in our Library Catalog (V-Cat):
Not The End Of The World by Geraldine McCaughrean

It was easy enough, until Sugar and her mother lost their home because of her dad's gambling debts. Now they are homeless, and worse, her mother begins to give up and even lose her mind. What will happen to this perservering girl that rights poems from words written across her heart? No one, not her southern bell mom, her drunk dad, or even her beloved, eccentric English teacher could ever have expected the journey Sugar would have to make before she was almost home. What Molly has done is exactly every good book needs: she has given it adventure over every page; she has taken me into Emma's feelings in a way which I could understand Emma and her actions fully; she has thrown in an unlikely romance, which Emma shuns with all her being; and after a few I didn't expect that she has written the epitome of a good book.

 -------------------------------------------

Find this Book in our Library Catalog (V-Cat):
Finding Faith by Molly Evangeline

Being teased. Laughed at. This is what Holden Harris has to live with every day at Fulton High School. Until one day, he remembers an old friend, Ella Reynolds. When they were preschool age (and before Holden had autism) they used to play together and their mothers were best friends. But all of that has changed now. But, when there is an opening for the school play, Beauty and the Beast, Ella wants Holden to take it. (And he does)! This is a very emotional book, and I would recommend it to anyone who understands what autism is.

 -------------------------------------------

Find this Book in our Library Catalog (V-Cat):
Unlocked by Karen Kingsbury
