Stop the Bleed Zoom Presentation
Zoom Meeting

Saturday, Oct. 17, 3:00 PM

Do you want to learn how to save a life? Do you want learn how to control major bleeding? The City of Santa Maria Public Library is proud to partner with Safety Consulting Services, LLC, to offer a free Stop the Bleed presentation through Zoom video conferencing on Saturday, October 17th, 2020 at 3:00 p.m.

Stop the Bleed teaches laypersons how to control major bleeding from traumatic situations through three methods:

  • Direct Pressure - This is the most common way of stopping any kind of bleeding and is effective 95% of the time. It simply means that you put direct pressure on the wound and hold it there until the bleeding stops.
  • Wound Packing- Wound Packing is used when the injury that is bleeding out is in a “junctional” area, such as the groin or shoulders and a tourniquet cannot be applied. Wound Packing is simply the technique of putting gauze with or without a clotting agent directly into a wound.
  • Tourniquet - In those cases where direct pressure does not stop the bleeding, the next level of care or treatment is to apply a tourniquet. A tourniquet can be applied to the arms or legs to stop the bleeding.

Scott Hunter, retired firefighter and certified Emergency Medical Technician, will lead the presentation on techniques used to Stop the Bleed. The class teaches laypersons how to become “Immediate Responders” by learning how to Stop the Bleed.
