We'll discuss Sarah Smarsh's memoir Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth. She writes poignantly about growing up in the country and witnessing the poverty of her relatives who led lives of untreated illness, abusive marriage, addiction, and unsafe working conditions. Determined to avoid being the victim of the shame and tragedy of poverty, Smarsh sought a way out through education and the avoidance of early pregnancy.
