What is a podcast?
A podcast is a cross between a radio show and an audiobook. Each episode is typically between 30-90 minutes, centering around one topic and sometimes features guest interviews.
Podcasts are streamed online or downloaded with apps like Spotify or Podbean.
I am so excited to partner with Ciara McCarthy of Report for America and the Victoria Advocate. She will introduce students to interviewing basics and guide them in sharing their stories.
Why a podcast?
Ending the stigma that surrounds mental illness starts with educating ourselves, understanding the connection between physical and mental health, and fostering open dialogue.
Why about mental health?
We will be meeting monthly, through May of 2020. Come to our first meeting on January 25th to find out all the details!
When will you meet?
What can I expect?Students involved in this project will have fun and learn something new. More specifically, they will take away two things:
1.) A feeling of connectedness + belonging
2.) Increased awareness of ways to care for their own mental health + ability to encourage a friend to get help
Are students in middle school too young to talk about mental health?
50% of adults with mental illness report symptoms were present before they reached the age of 14 (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
