The Nix, as Hill characterizes them, are shapeshifting spirits from Norwegian folklore that attach themselves to people and steer them toward loving those that end up hurting them the most. In the wide ranging story full of “inventive wit and energy,” a political-protest-incident-turned-viral-video, perpetrated by his estranged mother, sparks the main character to agree to a deal to write a tell-all biography of her. As he digs into her childhood to keep his writing career alive, his own history is examined. The sometimes profound, beautiful writing roams through “coming of age, awkward friendships and first loves … the loneliness of intelligence, about loss and mishandled relationships (Docx,” The satire is “intelligently funny,” and side plots are complexly layered in a Dickensian-like style. Critical reviews from major journalists were overwhelmingly positive for this debut novel. Copies of the books are available at the library. Newcomers welcome!
