Prompt

Attempt to write a modular story or at least come up with a good concept for one. What’s a modular story? Good question.

Linear stories follow the conflict-climax-resolution model. Modular stories are made up of component parts. In a modular story there is an overarching story or theme throughout the entire piece, but the majority of the work itself is comprised of isolated incidents (modules) that are all approximately the same intensity and are only, and then loosely, connected to each other.  Still confused?

The Things they Carried by Tim O’Brien

Here we are in Paradise by Tony Earley includes “The Prophet from Jupiter” a modular story. “In the Cemetery Where Al Jolson was Buried” by Amy Hempel

Bonus Prompt

You’re at your favorite department store buying a birthday present for a friend. As the cashier gives you change, you notice a message with specific instructions scribbled on one of the bills. What do the instructions say? Do you carry them out and if so, how?
