Thomas Cole and the
Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School: The Landscape Art Legacy - Online
Clinton Community Library

Tuesday, Mar. 1, 7:00 PM

Come explore 19th century American landscape paintings to reveal how American identity has been profoundly linked with the land. In this image-rich talk, we’ll dig beyond the surface layers that create a streamlined, but simplistic notion of the American character. We’ll take a slow look at artworks that tell complex, often coded stories, reflecting both the challenges and greatness of our country. Artists include Thomas Cole, the symbolic head of the Hudson River School, Frederick Church, and artists who promoted the west.

Led by Rena Tobey, American Art Historian, our image-filled talk will provide:

  • An overview of two generations of Hudson River School artists, some well-known, others less familiar
  • An understanding of the influence of Thomas Cole on artists and on political and cultural thought that continues today
  • An ability to 'read' symbols and metaphors in landscape paintings that you can use during your next museum visit
  • Pleasure in the beauty and majesty of these artworks

Leave refreshed, with renewed vigor for our natural world and all its meaning.

Registration required.
