Discuss the insightful short story collection, Frying Plantain by Zalika Reid-Benta, a finalist for the Danuta Gleed Literary Award, Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writer Prize, Trilium Book Award and Forest of Reading Evergreen Award. Set in a neighborhood known as “Little Jamaica,” Frying Plantain follows one girl from childhood through adulthood as she traverses the tensions present in her family, the cultural expectations for second-generation immigrants and first-generation immigrants along with Black identity in a predominately white society. BookPage praises Reid-Benta saying she’s “a natural storyteller...This splendid collection marks her as a writer to watch.”

Copies of Frying Plantain are currently available to read and listen on Hoopla from the library’s website at hudsonlibrary.org. Registration to attend the book discussion is required. Participants will be emailed an invitation to meet on Zoom one day before the program.
