In Mexico, son is a term used to define a large family of regional music and dance styles. There is no other group like Sones de México Ensemble. Set in Chicago, they are an award-winning sextet of talented multi-instrumentalists dedicated to taking Mexican son to the world’s stages. They are true to their roots and also daring and innovative. Established in 1994 as a non-profit organization they keep the tradition alive with professionalism and an emphasis on education.

Sones de Mexico will perform the program Beyond the Music:  A Musical Geography of Mexico, a presentation of some regional styles of Mexican Folk Music. Different regions of the country have unique instruments, repertoire and techniques rarely heard outside these regions. Let the Grammy nominated Sones de Mexico Ensemble, a specialist in these regional styles, be your guide in this special lecture on Mexico's musical geography.

This event is partly funded by a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts.
