The Ellis Island Project: The Spirit of Millions
In 1983 Montclair State College formed an agreement with the Naonal Park Service to offer a course to undergraduate and graduate students that would allow students to photograph the island while also providing documentaon to the Park Service. For an entire summer students, along with photography professor Klaus Schnitzer, traveled to the island on weekends with permission to access all and any parts of the island. Many decades later, I have taken my photographs from that time to tell an Ellis Island story from an unusual perspecve. In addion to the photographs, I also collected some video images using the primive VHS equipment that was available in the early 1980s. This presentaon will give observers a chance to see the decay of a magnicent architectural complex left abandoned in one of the busiest harbors in the world. The images will be tied to the history of the island and the important role it played in immigraon to the United States as well as some lile known roles it played in war and polics. Perhaps most importantly, this presentation tells a story about the rare adventure of a New Jersey nave with interests in art, science, and history who walked away with not only physical images of Ellis Island but lasting memories of a unique moment in time.
One hour presentaon with photographic and video visuals.
