Up for Discussion (Main Street’s book discussion group)

Join other adults in a discussion of the book, Bee Season by Myla Goldberg on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the Main Street Library Friends’ Bookstore [NEW LOCATION].

Copies of the book are available for participants to borrow from the Reference desk at the Main Street Library, or to check out from any branch in the Newport News Public Library system.

Registration is required for attendance. Please contact the libraries to register or visit the library’s website for registratrion.

Everyone is welcome to join the Loosely Knit group, which meets every Thursday of the month, from 9:30 - 11:30 am. Anyone who enjoys knitting, crocheting or any craft is welcome. No registration is required.

The Last Monday from 9:30 - 11:30 am

A new job club for adults, the PB Jobseekers club offers members the ability to network with each other while obtaining some needed skills for entering the workforce. Membership is open to about 30 residents of the Southeast Community and surrounding areas. Weekly meetings are held on the last Monday of the month from 9:30 - 11:30 am. Registration is required and is ongoing by visiting or calling the Pearl Bailey Library.

Learn how to register for and use the Virginia Employment Commission’s career website. This is a powerful online job seeker system that provides fast access to a complete set of employment tools including job searching, resume/cover letter builder, career exploration, training/education programs, and unemployment services. This class will be held in the Business Information Center at the Main Street Library.

PAWS to Read

Dogs in the library?! The PAWS to READ program helps children ages 6 to 10 build their confidence by reading out loud to trained therapy dogs at Grissom Library on the first Saturday of each month. Parents need to sign a permission form and may accompany their children. No registration is required.

Learning on Laptops Math Blast: Strategies for Algebra I, II and Geometry

Teens in grades 9-12 can get extra help with their math. Teen Advisory Committee member Brandon Ashlock with share his personal math strategies for Algebra I, II, and Geometry with other high school students. Classes are held the second Thursday of each month.
