Countdown to the Aug
Main Library
Friday, Jul. 14, 1:00 to 3:00
The total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017, will be the first total solar eclipse visible across the United States in nearly a century.  The average person will get a few chances in a lifetime to see a partial solar eclipse, but the opportunity to observe a total solar eclipse is, for many, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness one of the most awe-inspiring sights of nature.  This talk will cover the basics of eclipse mechanics, how to safely observe a solar eclipse, what one can expect to see, and information specific to the August 21, 2017.  No prior knowledge of eclipses is required, and questions are welcomed and highly encouraged!

Dr. Teets, who grew up in Clarksville, Tennessee, went to Austin Peay State University, where he graduated in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in physics. He earned his doctorate in astrophysics from Vanderbilt in 2012.  He began working at Dyer Observatory in 2006 as a student assistant and was promoted to staff astronomer in 2012.  He offers public tours of the observatory, works with school groups that visit the observatory, operates the telescopes at public events, among other responsibilities.
