Summer Reading Kick-off: Celebrating children’s literature with local authors
Main Library
Saturday, Jun 1, 2:00 PM
Local author and Piedmont Laureate John Claude Bemis will lead a conversation with four of the Triangle's most exciting children's book writers: Clay Carmichael, Frances O'Roark Dowell, Kelly Starling Lyons, and Cate Tiernan.  The authors will share stories about why they became writers, what books have inspired them, and offer suggestions for writers (both young and young at heart).  Come get ideas for beach reading or your summer writing project!
Whether you're a young reader or writer, a parent or teacher, if you love children's literature, you'll want to join us for this inspiring discussion.
Clay Carmichael is the author-illustrator of the award-winning novel Wild Things, as well as the picture books Bear at the Beach, Lonesome Bear, and Used-Up Bear.  www.claycarmichael.com
Frances O'Roark Dowell is the author of the Edgar Award-winning novel Dovey Coe and this year's NC Battle of the Book's selection Chicken Boy, among many other novels.  www.francesdowell.com
Kelly Starling Lyons is the award-winning author of several picture books, includingEllen's Broom, which is nominated for this year's North Carolina Children's Book Award, and the Southern Independent Bookseller's Okra Pick Hope's Gift.  www.kellystarlinglyons.com
Cate Tiernan is the author of the wildly popular Immortal Beloved and Sweep series.  Under her real name Gabrielle Charbonnet, she has co-authored two books with James Patterson, including the best-selling Witch &Wizard.  catetiernan.net

Books will be available for purchase from Purple Crow at the event. Sponsored by Friends of the Orange County Public Library.
