Let’s Talk About It!: Muslim Journeys - Connected Histories Reading & Discussion Series led by Scholar Barbara Petzen
Cascades Library
Tuesday, Sep. 23, 7:00 pm (Tuesdays, September 9 & 23, October 7 & 21 and November 4, 7:00 pm)
Register Online or call 703-444-3228.
Centuries before the dawn of the modern age—even before the voyages of Christopher Columbus—the world was already a surprisingly interconnected place. All of the books in the Let’s Talk About It! series explore this theme of “connected histories,” all touch upon the idea that the world has always been interconnected and Islam and the West are products of a shared and intertwined past.
Books will be available for registered participants at the Adult Services Desk beginning August 12.
When Asia Was the World: Traveling Merchants, Scholars, Warriors, and Monks Who Created the ‘Riches of the East’ by Stewart Gordon
The House of Wisdom:
How Arabic Science saved Ancient Knowledge and Gave us the Renaissance by Jim Al-Khalili
The Ornament of the World by Maria Rosa Menocal
Leo Africanus by Amin Maalouf, translated by Peter Sluglett
In an Antique Land by Amitav Ghosh
All of the books to be discussed in this series are part of the Bridging Cultures: Muslim Journeys titles. The books were selected with the advice of distinguished scholars in the fields of anthropology, world history, religious studies, interfaith dialogue, the history of art and architecture, world literature, Middle East studies, Southeast Asian studies, African studies, and Islamic studies.

The scholar for the Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys series is Barbara Petzen, director of Middle East Connections, executive director of Oneblue, president of the Middle East Outreach Council and former education director for the Middle East Policy Council. Petzen earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Politics and Middle Eastern Studies at Columbia College and a second Honours BA as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in Oriental Studies. Petzen’s interests focus on the place of Muslims in American history and contemporary society, particularly the issues of race and gender.

The Bridging Cultures Bookshelf is a project of National Endowment for the Humanities, conducted in cooperation with the American Library Association’s Public Programs Office, with support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Additional support for the arts and media components was provided by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Arts.

Recertification points will be available for LCPS teachers.
