Bosnian Immigrants: Opportunities and Challenges in the Greater Rochester Area

Aiša Purak was born in a small, beautiful village called Jastrebac in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a refugee, she came to Rochester and started working with the Bosnian community, primarily with women and children. Aiša will talk about her experiences and her book Bosnian Immigrants, a study of 100 Bosnian families who immigrated to Rochester and found a way to adapt to life in a new society. Need for Civility in Contentious Times

Dr. Timothy Madigan, an associate professor of philosophy at St John Fisher,  will discuss whether or not today’s society is more contentious than previous ones; what factors may be contributing to a lack of civility; what strategies can be used to encourage greater mutual respect; and why civil conversation is a necessary factor for a democratic community.
