Library One of "40 Galileos"

In recognition of the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of a telescope, the Cincinnati Observatory has established a bold program called the 40 Galileos: Starry Messenger Project, in which they are giving away 40 Orion 8" Dobsonian telescopes to individuals and organizations.  The Batesville Memorial Public Library was fortunate to be one of the final 40, out of 145 total applicants, who will be given a telescope on September 11, 2009.  As finalists in this project, a representative from the library must attend two training sessions at the observatory, and conduct and report on two public programs with a telescope.  Stay tuned for announcements on those upcoming programs.  We are very excited about this program and have started planning what we will do with the telescope once it has been given to us.  Watch for a "Name the Telescope" contest in the near future!

Grace period introduced
Good news for borrowers who just can't seem to get their items back to the library on time! The library has just instituted a "grace period" for items that are overdue. You will have a few days to bring an item back, even after it is due, without having to pay a fine. But please notice: If an item is eight or more days late, you will be assessed a fine for all the days it is late. (Example: If a DVD is just a couple days late, there's no fine assessed. If that DVD is returned eight days late, a fine of $8.00, or $1.00 per late day, is assessed.)

Oh, the weather outside is frightful...
Sometimes the weather outside is frightful.  And that means schools may be delayed or closed, activities and services may be interrupted.  But is the library open?
Usually, yes.  Our policy is that we will keep our regular hours, provided there is not a driving ban in effect.  Of course, severe weather may cause us to open late or close early.
Any change in our regular hours will be announced on WRBI 103.9 on your FM radio, or on their website at www.wrbiradio.com (Click on the School Delays icon).  We may or may not be able to change the announcement on our phone message, so listening to the radio or checking their website is the way to go.
