Just finished reading...

A Pale Horse by Charles Todd. I actually put off reading this book when I found out that Charles Todd was really a mother and son writing team who are American.  My snobbish attitude about everything English was somewhat misplaced, however, since the book is very true to its roots, well-researched, and ultimately quite readable. Ian Rutledge, a Scotland Yard inspector, just barely survived the Great War. Although he has recovered physically, he cannot shake the lingering mental trauma, as evidenced by Hamish, a dead comrade who continues to speak to him, giving advice and criticism. In this novel, Rutledge is sent on two different cases, a missing person of concern to the War Office and an unidentified corpse found in the ruins of an abbey. The cases begin to connect, as Rutledge shuttles between several country shires, giving a convincing picture of life in 1920's Britain. More books in the series are also available through interlibrary loan.
