Chabon introduces us to Meyer Landsman, a tough, hard-drinking Jewish policeman in Sitka, Alaska, who finds himself in the middle of a murder case with international implications. And just how did the Jews get to Alaska anyway?  An inventive plot with lots of fascinating characters make this detective story well worth a look.
