Franny K. Stein, Mad Scientist by Jim Benton

Welcome to the world of Mad Scientist, Franny K. Stein. In this series, Franny, along with her "lab" assistant, Igor, a labrador retriever (who isn't quite all Lab) creates many fantastic experiments. In the
Frantastic Voyage, Franny discovers that she can distract Igor with the TV, obviously, to get him out of the way so she can work on constructing her Doomsday Device. Problems arise when Igor starts doing whatever he sees on TV, whether it be eating wads of bubblegum or dressing up in a bikini! Igor accidently swallows the Doomsday Device while eating a plate of grapes, and Franny has no choice but to minaturize herself and venture into the inside of her lab assistant in order to save the world! This book is great for kids ages seven to ten. These hilarious adventures will have you giggling from beginning to end. This is a great book for children who are just beginning to read as it is full of hilarious illustrations.

Molly McGinty Has a Really Good Day by Gary Paulsen

Ever think you were having a bad day? Molly's day was not going well. She lost her notebook which contained "everything" she needed to live, including her homework. The day is Senior Citizens' Day at Our Lady of Mercy Middle School. Molly has an unusual grandmother, Irene, who is visiting school with Molly for the day. Grandma is really rather "cool" (for a grandma), has good ideas and voices them. However, between losing her notebook and grandma's involvement in Molly's social life, the day gets a little complicated to say the least. This book is a great easy read particularly for girls in the second, third or fourth grade. The author, Gary Paulsen, is known for his books relating to boys. This was a new style for the author to write in which a girl is the main character. I liked quotes from Molly's notebook at the beginning of each chapter. What do you think?

Mr. Chickee's Funny Money by Christopher Paul Curtis

This is a very funny book! I really enjoyed reading this particular story. Mr. Chickee is a blind man who befriends Steven, the main character in this story. Steven is a 9 year old boy, who likes to help Mr.Chickee. Steven helps Mr. Chickee by going to the grocery store with him. One day, Mr. Chickee says that he needs to leave the Flint area for awhile, and so he gives Steven some money. Steven is reluctant to take it, as his parents have told him not to accept money from anyone. However, Mr. Chickee insists, and Steven takes it. It is an unusual paper bill, that Steven has never seen before. It has a 1 and 15 zeros on it! It turns out that this is a Quadrillon dollar bill!! Steven has never seen this much money before, and neither has his friend, Russell, or Russell's dog Zoopy. This money has a picture of someone who was not a dead president or a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In fact, it is someone of music fame, the master of soul, James Brown. Steven tries to do the right thing and tells his parents about the money. At first, they think he is making all of this up. But then, they realize that he isn't kidding, and so they take him to the Treasury building, where some not so smart Federal agents want to get a hold of this money. Steven, as president of the Future Detectives of Flint, realizes that he is actually smarter than Agent Fondoo, who really wants his hands on the money. Steven, with his Snoopeze 2000, has a few tricks up his sleeve so that the "Feds," will not get the money. How Steven and Russell and Zoopy end up getting rid of the money is pretty funny, and you need to read the story to find out how the Future Detectives of Flint solve the mytery. A very funny story, which had me laughing from beginning to end. A terrific beginning that really captures the reader. A good humorous mystery for kids in grades 3-5, possibly even 6th grade. Just so much fun!

The Freaky Joe Club Secret File #1: The Mystery of the Swimming Gorilla by P.J. McMahon

This new mystery series is a lot of fun. For those who like code names and the thrill of catching the bad guys, this is the book for you. Conor or "The Condor," is the ring leader of the club. The other two members, are Timmy (code name "Jimbo") and Jack (code name "Chase William). There are only three members, because there "can only be three." In their first case, the Freaky Joe Club has to solve the mystery of the missing bicycles. With the help of Conor's mother, and Officer Butowski, and "the Beast," the Freaky Joe Club solves the mystery. If you look at the title it refers to a "swimming gorilla." Do gorillas swim? Read this book to find out. A very fun read. Recommended for grades 2-4. Boys will especially like this series.
