The Birthday Ball by Lois Lowry
Princess Patricia Priscilla is approaching her 16th birthday and is dreading it! She must pick a suitor to marry, and is bored by all who will be asking for her hand. All of the suitors are perfectly dreadful and she doesn't want to marry any of them! There is to be a birthday ball and Princess Patricia Priscilla will make her choice at that time. As the dance draws nearer, Princess Patricia is bored, and to liven things up a bit, she decides to switch clothes with her chambermaid, Tess, a la The Prince and the Pauper. Pat, as she prefers to be called, goes to the village school and there gets quite an education into the life of the peasants. She is also quite enamored of the schoolmaster. Also in disguise, accompanying the princess, is her cat, Delicious. The Princess often likes to say "It's nutritious,Delicious!"
What ensues next are tales of mistaken identity, many twists and turns, and not all fairy tales end the same. Award winning author, Lois Lowry, once again delights readers. Lots of puns, and fun vocabulary words abound, and the middle schools jokes will be sure to amuse young students. Recommended for grades 3-6.
