The Traitors' Gate
Newbery Award winning author, Avi, has set his latest novel in mid-nineteenth century Victorian London, where fourteen-year-old John Huffam finds himself trying to assume the role of savior of his family when his father is threatened with banishment to debtors' prison for non-payment of gambling losses.  His mother seems to do nothing but complain, while his older sister seems able only  to bemoan her lessened likelihood of being able to snare a husband given the family's straightened circumstances.  John's task is continually thwarted by the lies he is told and the misdirections he receives from family and acquaintances alike as he seeks to untangle the intricate web woven by spies, detectives, and relatives.  Even Sary the sneak is not wholly the ally she seems to be.  With more than a bit of the flavor of Charles Dickens's David Copperfield, the quickly twisting plot and colorful characters are sure to keep middle-school readers turning pages to get to the surprising ending.
