For years, Samantha has been observing the family next door: eight lively kids, two laid-back parents, and an overgrown, toy-filled yard. The Garretts are a big contrast with her family, which includes her uptight single mother running for the state senate, and Samantha and her sister, who both attend a posh private school. One of the Garretts has been watching Samantha, too, and before long, Jase and Samantha fall in love. Samantha’s mother is so pre-occupied with her senate race and the new younger man who is working for her that she doesn’t notice that Samantha is spending lots of time at the Garrett house. Samantha notices that the chaos at the Garrett house is infused with love, as well as plenty of humor, and she begins to babysit for the younger children. She keeps her Garrett life secret from her best friend and her family, and this is where some of the trouble lies, but things really get tenuous when an accident occurs. I really loved this book, partially because there was a family much like the Garretts next door when I was growing up. If you’re tired of reading teen books where the families are dysfunctional, it is a refreshing change to read about a family that works well, even though they are far from perfect. Premarital sex and alcohol use by minors. For grades 9 and up.
