Second in the Frontier Magic series (the first book was Thirteenth Child), this book follows Eff from ages 18-20 as she goes on an exploratory trip to study the plants and animals of the area out West, beyond the magical Great Barrier. This book cleverly combines an alternative 1850’s United States with a population that is capable of performing magic for practical reasons, such as protecting from wild animals, doing housework, and working the land. In the second book, Wrede further expands on this fascinating world she has created, revealing new twists and turns. Eff is a strong female character, though not without self-doubt, as she considers her choices on the brink of adulthood. Unfortunately, this makes for a weak plot line—what Eff wants is murky, and the purpose of the trip isn’t compelling enough to pull the reader along. However, if you enjoyed Thirteenth Child, you will want to read this book, as it is obviously leading up to a third novel in this series. It’s a fascinating world to spend time in. Ages 12 and up.
